Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls On Tie-Breaking Basket In Final Three Minutes

Daniela Quesada Villalobos scored the last four points of an 11-1 run to tie the game with 13 seconds left, but Tiffin University got the winning basket with 3.8 seconds left to hand Salem University an 82-80 loss in NCAA Division II women's basketball Saturday at T. Edward Davis Gymnasium. Nia Bishop eclipsed the 20-point mark for the second time this season with a game-high 23 points.

Salem (1-2) trailed 79-69 with just over five minutes left to play when Inari Jones sank a pair of free throws to trigger the Tigers' run. Alicia Smith followed with a layup and Bishop hit two free throws to pull Salem within 79-75 with 3:27 remaining.

After Tiffin (3-2) added a free throw, Precious Price answered with a free throw of her own with 1:55 left. Quesada-Villalobos drew a foul with 52 seconds remaining and connected on both free throws to draw the Tigers within 80-78.

Quesada-Villalobos made a steal on Tiffin's next possession and then got the offensive board and putback on a missed Tiger shot to tie the game 80-80 with 13 seconds left.

Tiffin ran down the clock and Aarion Nichols hit a short jumper to put the Dragons back on top. Salem called a time out, but the Tigers lost the ball in the frontcourt before getting off a shot attempt and Tiffin gained possession to hold on for the win.

The first quarter saw four ties and four lead changes before Tiffin used a pair of free throws on a Salem bench technical and back-to-back three-pointers by Jensen Hiegel and Brooke Wesner to build a 35-26 lead with 3:04 left in the second quarter.

Salem used the three-ball to get back into the game as Aaliyah Holmes and Price both hit from beyond the arc to start an 8-0 run. The Tigers drew within a point on Quesada-Villalobos' basket with exactly one minute left before halftime, but Tiffin added a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to go into the locker room with a 37-34 lead.

A basket by Nerea Arambarri Fernandez put Salem on top 39-38 with 8:36 left in the third quarter for the Tigers' first lead since the first quarter. After a basket by Smith, Tiffin answered with a 15-2 run to take its first double-digit lead of the game at 53-43 with 2:56 remaining.

The margin never grew beyond 10, but the Dragons maintained the lead until Quesada-Villalobos's tying basket in the final 13 seconds.

Quesada-Villalobos finished with 12 points, while Price, Smith and Endia Jones added nine points apiece. Bishop and Quesada-Villalobos each pulled down five rebounds for the Tigers. Bishop hit 7-of-8 free throws as Salem went 12-for-16 from the line.

Jessica Chase led a balanced Dragon attack with 12 points. Tiffin was 22-for-26 from the free throw line.

Salem has its third home game of the season Wednesday as the Tigers play host to Slippery Rock University. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
