SALEM, W.Va. – Senior
Malik Toppin notched his 1,000
th career point as a member of the Salem University men's basketball team as the Tigers dominated Mansfield in a 94-70 win on Senior Night in a lively T. Edward Davis Gymnasium, Wednesday night.
With the win, Salem finishes the season with a 17-9 record, as Mansfield falls to 4-22.
Salem shot an outstanding 53.5 percent from the field (38-71), while Mansfield shot a mere 35.7 percent (25-70) from the floor.
The Tigers dominated the paint as they outscored the Mountaineers 50-30, also notching more second-chance points 8-2. Salem easily controlled the glass grabbing 20 more rebounds than Mansfield 46-26.
For the third time this season, Toppin notched 30 points or more with a game-high 34 points and grabbed nine rebounds. The 34 points put Toppin at 1,002 for his career at Salem.
Senior
Ferlandis Penny netted 17 points and grabbed three boards, while senior Showan Faltz recorded his first double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Senior
Christopher Shields added 10 points and seven rebounds as he was the only other Tiger to eclipse double digits.
Salem controlled the game from start to finish, as the Tigers started the game off with a 16-6 lead at 12:14 in the first half after Penny was fouled on a three-point attempt and connected on all three free throws.
The Tigers upped their lead to 17 (30-13) after Toppin hammered it home off an assist from junior
Malique Ross with 5:41 remaining in the first half.
Salem held a 44-25 advantage over Mansfield at intermission.
The Tigers extended the lead furthermore in the second half, as they held the largest lead of the game of 32 after a monster slam from Penny at 8:57 for a 72-40 advantage.
This wraps up the Tigers regular season and is the first time since the 2005-06 season that Salem has finished with 17 or more wins.
