CLERMONT, Fla. – The Salem University softball team split the day, earning a win against Saint Michael's 12-4, while taking a loss to Purdue Northwest 8-2.
These games take the Tigers to 3-10 on the season.
In game one, Salem was behind going into the bottom of the second inning 1-0. With bases loaded, senior
Kaleigh Decker doubled to left center to drive in two runs, giving the Tigers the lead 2-1. Sophomore
Casey Moritz added with a two-run single to center field, increasing the lead 4-1.
The Tigers scored again in the fourth inning. Base hits from Decker and freshman
Kimberly Reckling brought Moritz to the plate with one out. Moritz singled to score Decker, 5-2.
A walk loaded the bases for Salem. Junior
Rosey Romick singled to allow Reckling and Moritz to cross the plate, 7-2. A sacrifice fly from junior
Christine Bombardiere brought another run in for the Tigers to end the fourth with a lead of 8-2.
Saint Michael's narrowed the lead 8-4 in the fifth inning, but the Tigers weren't finished. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Tigers. Three more singles from Moritz, Romick and junior
Breanna Jimenez drove in four more runs, 12-4.
The run rule came into effect to end the game after the fifth inning to give the Tigers the win.
In game two, Salem's offense was over-powered by Purdue Northwest. Purdue out-hit the Tigers 12-5.
Going into the second inning, the Tigers were behind 1-0. An error and passed ball from Purdue, allowed the Tigers to score, tying the game 1-1. An RBI sacrifice fly from Decker gave Salem the lead 2-1.
The Tigers kept the lead until the bottom of the fourth inning, as the Pride added four runs to the board, 5-2.
Salem's offense shut down, while Purdue tacked on another two three runs to take the win from the Tigers, 8-2.
The Tigers wrap up their trip to the Spring Games Monday, as they take on American International at 3:45 p.m. and face NYIT again at 6:00 p.m.
