Seventh-Inning Comeback Secures Sweep

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Salem University softball team concluded its 2019 season with two wins against Kentucky State, 2-1 and 9-7, after a seventh-inning comeback win, Tuesday afternoon.
 
With the sweep, the Tigers finish 12-30 on the season.
 
Salem outhit Kentucky State 8-7 in the first game.
 
The Thorobreds scored quickly in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
 
The Tigers answered in the top of the second inning scoring one run as junior Sydney McPherson singled to left field to start the inning. McPherson rounded the bases off of a bunt and a fielder's choice. Later in the inning, she scored on a sacrifice groundout to tie the game 1-1.
 
Junior Rosey Romick hit a single to left field to lead-off the top of the third inning. A sacrifice bunt from junior Breanna Jimenez advanced Romick to second. Junior Christine Bombardiere hit an RBI double to center field, scoring Romick to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead and the win over the Thorobreds.
 
Romick led the Tigers in game one at the plate going 4-4 with one run scored, while McPherson was 2-3 with another run scored.
 
In game two, the Tigers outhit the Thorobreds 14-8 in a seventh-inning comeback win.
 
Kentucky State got on the board first scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning for a quick 2-0 lead.
 
Salem scored in the top of the second inning on a couple fielding errors from the Thorobreds to cut the lead 2-1.
 
A lead-off single from Jimenez and a double from senior Kaleigh Decker put runners on second and third for the Tigers in the top of the third inning. A sacrifice grounder from Bombardiere scored Jimenez to tie the game at 2-2.
 
The Thorobreds scored three more runs in the bottom of the third inning to regain the lead 5-2 going into the top of the fourth inning.
 
Kentucky State tacked on another run to further its lead 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
McPherson hit a single to lead off the fifth inning. McPherson shortly advanced to third on a throwing error, later scoring on a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 6-3.
 
A triple to right center from Jimenez put her on third base as Decker hit a sacrifice grounder to score Jimenez putting the score at 6-4 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
 
The Thorobreds added another run to the board for a 7-4 lead entering the last inning.
 
In the top of the seventh inning, down 7-4, the Tigers were led off with a single to center field from junior Morgan Atkinson. An error put runners on first and third with one out. Another infield error allowed Atkinson to reach home, cutting the lead 7-5.
 
Two more errors committed by Kentucky State allowed another run to score, 7-6 and juiced the bases. A sacrifice grounder scored another run for the Tigers to tie the game 7-7 with two outs.
 
McPherson came up with a two-run single to center field to give the Tigers the 9-7 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
 
With the Thorobreds unable to answer back, the Tigers took the 9-7 win and earned the sweep against Kentucky State.
 
McPherson led the Tigers going 4-5 at the plate with a run and the two winning RBIs. Jimenez added to the Tigers' win with three hits in five at-bats, with three runs and a triple.
