MARION, N.C. -The Salem University baseball team bounced back and defeated Winston-Salem State 5-2, Friday morning on the second day of the Independent Baseball Tournament.
Sophomore
Carlos Pena started on the hill and earned the win for the Tigers as he fanned nine batters and allowed only three hits and two runs in six innings pitched. From the last out of the first inning to the top of the sixth Pena retired thirteen-straight batters.
Sophomore
Tyler D'Alessandro was 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored, while senior
Harrison Hollis was 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored.
WSSU added the first run of the game off a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
In the bottom half of the first inning, D'Alessandro doubled down the right field line to bring home Hollis and senior
Thirus Jones for a 2-1 lead.
Later in the inning, junior
Tyler Ault hit into a fielder's choice RBI as D'Alessandro crossed the plate for a 3-1 advantage over the Rams.
In the top of the second Pena retired the side as he struck out three straight batters to end the top half of the inning.
Off of a sacrifice fly from left field, junior
Dalton Robison earned the RBI as Ault crossed home for a 4-1 Tiger lead in the bottom of the fifth.
D'Alessandro singled up the middle in the bottom of the sixth as Hollis scored fo give Salem a 5-2 lead over the Rams.
The Tigers are back in action tonight as they will play Bluefield State at approximately 7:00 p.m.
