Nail-Biter: Women's Soccer Plays Chestnut Hill Within One Goal

Box Score Chelsea Cordice recorded 14 saves on 15 shots on goal, including an initial save on a penalty kick, but a goal on the ensuing rebound was the difference as Salem University fell to Chestnut Hill College 1-0 in NCAA Division II women's soccer Friday at Philadelphia. Cordice has reached double digits in saves in each of her first three matches for the Tigers.

For the second time in three matches, Tamara Queiroz had the first shot of the contest, just missing left in the third minute. Salem (0-4) also had a corner kick opportunity in the 31st minute, but was unable to convert.

A Tiger foul in the box in the 36th minute led to a penalty kick for Chestnut Hill (2-1). Cordice stopped Maddie Jimenez's shot, but Jimenez was able to put home the rebound to break the deadlock.

Queiroz nearly evened the score less than 60 seconds later, but Chestnut Hill goalkeeper Amanda Ianniciello was able to make the save. Ianniciello also recorded a save on Arianna Villalobos' shot two minutes after Queiroz's attempt.

Cordice and the Tiger defense fought off 17 shot attempts, including five on goal, to keep the Griffins scoreless in the second half. But Salem was unable to put home the equalizer. The Tigers finished with seven shots, four on goal.

Salem continues its weekend road trip Sunday as the Tigers visit Orangeburg, N.Y., to take on Dominican College. Match time is noon.
