Volleyball Wraps Up Play At Rebich Investments Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 EDINBORO, PA. – Salem University concluded play at the Rebich Investments Volleyball Invitational with two more matches Saturday at Edinboro, Pa. The Tigers fell to Lock Haven University 25-15, 25-19, 25-15, then dropped a 25-16, 25-21, 25-16 decision against West Virginia Wesleyan College. The two-day tournament was hosted by Edinboro University.

Salem has its home opener Tuesday as the Tigers host a tri-match at T. Edwards Gymnasium. Salem takes on University of Rio Grande at 3 p.m. and faces Alderson Broaddus University at 7 p.m. Rio Grande and Alderson Broaddus match up at 5 p.m.

Saturday's Matches
Salem (0-4) forged a 14-14 tie in the opening set against Lock Haven after a kill by Liane Moser, but the Tigers were limited to one point the remainder of the set. Kills by Moser and Jalavia Johnson staked Salem to a 12-9 lead in the second set. After a rally by Lock Haven, Alaina Weltz's ace broke a 12-12 tie. An 8-1 run gave Lock Haven a 20-14 lead before a kill by Makhia Hinton and Johnson's two kills and block assist with Breslyn Argo pulled the Tigers within a point. The Bald Eagles scored the final five points to take a two-set lead. Lock Haven scored the first seven points of the third set and led the entire set.

Johnson and Moser paced Salem with seven kills apiece, while Hinton and Alaina Weltz each tallied 11 digs to lead the Tigers defensively. Johnson and Weltz each added two aces.

In the Tigers' final match of the tournament, the first set saw nine ties and six lead changes before West Virginia Wesleyan pulled away and go on to a three-set win.

Weltz recorded a season-high 23 assists, while Johnson had a season-best nine kills to go with three blocks. Moser added eight kills and Hinton tallied seven kills.

Friday's Matches
Jalavia Johnson sparked a late third-set comeback, but the rally came up short as Salem University fell to Glenville State College 25-12, 25-16, 25-20 to conclude day one of the Rebich Investments Volleyball Invitational Friday at Edinboro, Pa. Earlier in the day, the Tigers opened their 2019 season with a 25-13, 25-13, 25-11 loss to tournament host Edinboro University.
 
Salem (0-2) trailed Glenville State 21-14 in the third set when Johnson rallied the Tigers. Johnson combined with Makhia Hinton on a block and Yesenia Munoz's ace forced a Glenville State timeout as Salem scored three unanswered points. Johnson answered a Glenville State block with a kill and combined with Liane Moser on a block to complete a 5-1 run and pull the Tigers within 22-19. But Glenville State scored three of the final four points to close out the set and the match.
 
In the opening set, kills by Hinton and Munoz forged an 8-8 tie before a 6-0 run put Glenville State back on top to stay. Salem cut an eight-point deficit down to 20-16 after an ace by Kyana Cardenas. Glenville State scored the final five points of the set.
 
Munoz led Salem with six kills, while Hinton, Johnson and Moser added four kills apiece. Johnson also had a match-high four blocks. Five different Tigers served an ace.
 
Against Edinboro, Moser recorded an early kill and the Tigers capitalized on five Fighting Scots errors to take a 6-4 lead in the first set. Edinboro came back with seven unanswered points to pull away. Salem jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second set after a kill by Hinton, but Edinboro came back with a 10-2 run and the Tigers never recovered. Edinboro scored the first four points of the third set and never looked back.
 
Johnson led the Tigers with three kills. Hinton and Alaina Weltz each served an ace for Salem.
