Aaliyah Holmes scored nine of her season-high 21 points during a school-record 40-point third quarter as Salem University surpassed the 100-point mark for the second consecutive game in the Tigers' 103-64 victory over Ohio Valley University in NCAA Division II women's basketball Thursday at T. Edward Davis Gymnasium. The back-to-back triple-digit performances are the first for the Tigers in 25 years.
Â
Salem (5-12) led 48-26 at halftime and the margin never fell below 20 points as
Endia Jones and Holmes connected on three-pointers in the first two-plus minutes of the third quarter. After
Nerea Arambarri Fernandez added a three-pointer Holmes hit a three from the left wing and followed with a three from the left corner in a span of 24 seconds to give Salem its first 30-point lead at 69-39.
Â
Endia Jones and
Precious Price each hit a three-pointer in the final minute and
Nia Bishop's free throw with 10 seconds left gave the Tigers their first 40-point quarter since the NCAA switched from two 20-minute halves to four 10-minute quarters at the start of the 2015-16 season.
Â
The Tigers scored the first 11 points of the fourth quarter as Bishop hit a pair of three's and Holmes followed with a three to give Salem its biggest lead at 99-49. Holmes' short jumper with 4:47 left to play put the Tigers over the century mark.
Holmes credited her teammates for her performance.
"I need to give all of the credit to my teammates," said Holmes, a senior guard from San Antonio, Texas. "They just kept giving me the ball and that's how I got hot. They just kept feeding me and feeding me."
Â
Salem jumped out to a 15-point first-quarter lead as seven Tigers combined for eight three-pointers.
Endia Jones hit a three for Salem's first points of the game, while Fernandez, Holmes,
Tamia Tart and
Inari Jones all followed suit as the Tigers built a 22-11 lead with 3:03 left.
Â
The lead never fell below 10 points as Bishop's three with exactly one minute remaining gave Salem a 28-15 advantage. After Ohio Valley hit a free throw with four seconds left, Fernandez drove past halfcourt and hit a 30-footer from above the top of the key at the buzzer to give the Tigers a 31-16 advantage.
Â
Ohio Valley (2-12) never got closer than 12 points in the second quarter and
Endia Jones hit a pair of three's in the final 93 seconds to give Salem a 22-point halftime bulge.
Â
Salem, which defeated Cheyney University 115-71 in its previous game, has scored at least 100 points in four contests this season, matching the total of the Tigers' 1995-96 team. The Tigers reached the 100-point mark five times in 1994-95, including a pair of back-to-back triple-digit outings.
Â
Bishop finished with 18 points and dished out five of the Tigers' 21 assists.
Endia Jones matched Holmes with 5-of-8 three-point shooting for 16 points and shared team-high rebounding honors with
Reeva Jackson with eight boards.
Alicia Smith added 13 points and five steals, while Fernandez finished with 11 points and four assists.
Â
Imani Ward led all players with 24 points and 20 rebounds for Ohio Valley. Akiya Brown added 17 points for the Fighting Scots.
Â
Salem plays the first of five consecutive away games Saturday as the Tigers travel to Bluefield, W.Va., to take on Bluefield State College. The final contest in the road stretch is a return match-up at Ohio Valley February 13. The Tigers' next home game is February 17 vs. Alderson Broaddus University.
