Women's Basketball Travels To Bluefield State Today

Salem University puts a trio of two-game streaks on the line as the Tigers travel to Bluefield, W.Va., this afternoon to take on Bluefield State College in NCAA Division II women's basketball. Tip-off is 2 p.m. and is the first game of a doubleheader with Tiger men's basketball at Bluefield State.

Live Stats

Salem (5-12) enters today's contest on a two-game winning streak and a two-game triple-digit streak after a 103-64 victory over Ohio Valley University Thursday. Also for the second game in a row, the Tigers set a school record for most three-pointers made in a game. The Tigers hit 21 three-pointers against Ohio Valley, just one game after connecting on 20 three's in their 115-71 win over Cheyney University.

Salem is one of only four teams in the nation (NCAA II) to hit at least 20 three-pointers in a game this season and the only team to do it twice. The Tigers rank second in the nation in three-pointers per game this season.

Nine different players hit from beyond the arc in the Thursday's win, led by Aaliyah Holmes and Endia Jones with five treys apiece. Holmes led five Tigers in double figures with a season-high 21 points.

The Tigers also set a school record by scoring 40 points in the third quarter Thursday. Since the NCAA changed women's basketball games from two 20-minute halves to four 10-minute quarters in 2015-16, a 40-point period has occurred only 13 times (not including this season).

After going 23 consecutive seasons without reaching the 100-point mark in a game, Salem has hit triple digits four times this season, tying the 1995-96 Tigers for second most 100-point games in a season. The 1994-95 team, which had been the last Tiger women's basketball team to score at least 100 points in back-to-back games, recorded five 100-point performances.

While the Tigers attempt to keep their winning and scoring streaks intact, they hope to see one streak come to an end. While Salem evened its home record to 5-5, the Tigers are 0-7 in away games this season.

Bluefield State (9-7) also enters today's contest on a two-game winning streak following Tuesday's 59-50 victory over Penn State-Beaver.

The Tigers won both meetings last year, 87-57 at Salem and 83-71 at Bluefield State. Precious Price dished out seven assists in the home win, while Nerea Arambarri Fernandez scored 26 points in the road win. The Tigers play host to the Big Blues February 22.

Today's game is the first of five consecutive away contests for Salem. The Tigers' next home game is February 17 against Alderson Broaddus University.
