Salem University rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but Frostburg State University pulled away to defeat the Tigers 93-85 in NCAA Division II women's basketball Saturday at Cumberland, Md.
Nia Bishop led the Tigers with 23 points. The game was played at Allegany College of Maryland.
Salem (3-11) trailed 71-61 with just over four minutes left in the third quarter and was still behind by nine points entering the fourth quarter. After Bishop's three-pointer and a three-point play by
Daniela Quesada helped pull Salem within two, Bishop tied the game 78-78 on a pair of free throws with 7:09 left to play. Bishop's first free throw did a complete revolution around the rim before going in.
Frostburg State (2-10) scored the next five points before Quesada sparked another Tiger rally. Quesada hit a layup and then forced an errant pass on the sideline. The Tigers worked the ball around to Quesada, who buried a three from the right corner to tie the game again 83-83 with 5:35 remaining.
Salem had opportunities to take its first lead of the second half, but was unable to convert on its next three possessions. Frostburg State's Amanda Emory broke the tie with 3:45 left and the Bobcats ended the game on a 10-2 run to seal the win. Quesada hit a pair of free throws with 45 seconds remaining for the Tigers' final points.
Bishop scored the first six points of the game on a three-pointer and a three-point play off of her own steal.
Aaliyah Holmes hit a three-pointer from the left corner to give the Tigers their biggest lead of the game at 14-4 with 5:35 remaining in the opening period. Frostburg State pulled within a field goal and had a chance to tie, but
Endia Jones blocked a layup attempt and
Alicia Smith hit all three free throws after getting fouled on a three-point attempt to give Salem a 24-19 lead with 1:35 remaining.
Frostburg State pulled within one at the end of the first quarter on Victoria Diggs' short jumper at the buzzer and her three-pointer at the start of the second period gave the Bobcats their first lead at 26-24. The next three minutes saw three ties before a pair of three-pointers broke a 30-30 tie and put Frostburg State on top for the remainder of the half.
The margin grew to as many eight points before Smith and Jones keyed a rally in the final 45 seconds. Smith and Jones sandwiched layups around a Bobcat basket and Jones's steal led to Smith's coast-to-coast layup at the buzzer to pull the Tigers within 55-54 at halftime.
Quesada scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half, while Holmes finished with 11 points for the Tigers.
Reeva Jackson pulled down eight rebounds and Jones had three blocked shots.
Emory led all players with 28 points and 21 rebounds for Frostburg State, which outrebounded the Tigers 56-38.
Salem returns to action Wednesday at Ohio Dominican University. Tip-off is 6 p.m. The Tigers' next home contest is January 13 when Salem plays host to Cheyney University as part of a doubleheader with Tiger men's basketball.
