Women's Basketball Falls At Division I Towson

Box Score Salem University connected on 11 three-pointers, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers fell to Division I Towson University 113-63 in NCAA women's basketball Friday at Towson, Md. Nerea Arambarri Fernandez hit five 3's and led all players with 20 points. The Tigers, who entered Friday's contest tied for fifth in the nation (Division II) in three-point field goals per game, have reached double figures in three-pointers in three of five games this season, including twice against Division I opponents.

A pair of driving layups each by Inari Jones and Alicia Smith accounted for Salem's first four field goals before Fernandez connected on the Tigers' first three-pointer of the contest with 1:22 left in the first quarter. Salem (0-5) has hit at least one 3-pointer in 71 consecutive games, dating back to January 3, 2018.

Fernandez added a pair of free throws before the end of the first quarter and opened the second quarter with two more treys to account for all of the points in Salem's 11-4 scoring run. But Towson (4-1) outscored the Tigers 22-5 over the final seven-plus minutes of the first half to take a 57-25 halftime lead.

Fernandez, Smith and Teyarra Johnson combined for five 3-pointers to help Salem outscore Towson 23-22 over the first nine minutes of the third quarter. Towson scored the final nine points of the quarter and went on to extend its lead in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Jordan Crace hit three 3-pointers and finished with 12 points for her first double-figure game as a Tiger. Smith added 10 points and led Salem with six rebounds.

Towson placed seven players in double figures, led by Kionna Jeter, Allie Kubek and Skye Williams with 17 points apiece.

Salem is idle until the first weekend of January when the Tiger women's and men's basketball teams travel south to Young Harris, Ga. The Tigers will play doubleheaders on consecutive days against Peach Belt Conference member Young Harris College January 3-4.
