Tigers Split Baseball Doubleheader With Kutztown

Tyler D'Alessandro went 4-for-4 with three doubles and a go-ahead two-run single as Salem University defeated Kutztown University 6-4 in game two of an NCAA Division II baseball doubleheader Saturday at Frank Loria Memorial Field. Carson Ellis pitched the final inning in relief for his second save of the week.

The win gave Salem a split after the Tigers fell 4-0 in the opener. Kutztown pitcher Doug Conrad tossed a seven-inning no-hitter and faced the minimum.

Salem (8-8) jumped out to a first-inning lead in game two as leadoff batter Noah Suarez drew a four-pitch walk and went to second on Parker Lenivy's two-strike sacrifice. Suarez scored Salem's first run of the day as D'Alessandro drove a pitch to right-center for a double and the Tigers' first hit of the day.

Suarez beat out an infield single to lead off the bottom of the third and Lenivy walked on four pitches. D'Alessandro came within a foot of a three-run homer to the centerfield warning track and settled for an rbi-double to extend the Tigers' lead to 2-0. D'Alessandro also led off the fifth with a ground rule double.

Lenivy made three plays at third base to help keep Kutztown scoreless. His leaping catch in the first, diving catch in the third and barehanded grab on a ground ball in the fourth robbed the Bears of three hits.

Kutztown (5-3) came back in the top of the fourth on a three-run homer by Collin Bishop. The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Dalton Robison hit a leadoff double and eventually scored from third with two outs after Suarez beat out an infield single to the right side.

The Bears regained the lead 4-3 with a run in the top of the fifth and had runners on first and second with nobody out in the sixth. Jason Gomez took over on the mound for Tiger starter Bailey Bethke and overcame a wild pitch to strike out three straight batters to keep Salem within a run.

Salem had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the sixth as Robison led off with a single, Tyler Ault was hit by a pitch and pinch-hitter Adlai Muench drew a four-pitch walk. After falling behind 0-2, D'Alessandro lined a single to right field to bring home pinch-runner AJ Marini and Ault. Muench scored from third when D'Alessandro induced a rundown attempting to steal second.

Ellis started the seventh and Kutztown had runners on second and third with two outs on a pair of hit batsmen and a passed ball. But Ellis ended the threat and sealed the win with a strikeout. Gomez (2-0) was credited with the win.

In the opener, Suarez battled back from an 0-2 count and drew a 10-pitch walk to lead off the bottom of the first. But Suarez was caught stealing for the first time this season and Conrad retired the remaining 20 Tiger batters. He finished with 10 strikeouts.

The two teams complete their three-game series Sunday with a single game. First pitch is noon at Frank Loria Memorial Field.
