BLUEFIELD, West Virginia - Even though the Tigers had a difficult day against Bowie State on Wednesday, the Salem volleyball program had a chance to get back on track with a late season Saturday doubleheader on the road in Bluefield. First, they squared off with Kentucky State, and then they had a rematch with the host Bluefield State. Despite making strides offensively, the Tigers dropped both contests 3-0. The games played out as follows:
Kentucky State 3, Salem 0
For the first contest of the day, Salem got off to a strong start and even took control of the game early. However, the Thorobreds would swing right back at the Tigers with a strong offensive attack that proved difficult to keep up with. Salem would struggle to keep pace with the fast-paced Kentucky State attack the rest of the way, and they fell 3-0. On the bright side, Makhia Hinton led the way for Salem with 9 digs and 9 kills for the Tigers.
Bluefield State 3, Salem 0
In the second game of the day, Salem had a chance for a little revenge in their second matchup with Bluefield State this season. The Tigers found themselves in a tough spot early as they fell behind quickly, but they roared back to narrow the gap in both the first and second sets. Unfortunately, the impressive comeback bids fell short in both instances. In the final set, Salem tried to claw their way back into the contest, but they struggled to keep pace with Bluefield State. Therefore, they fell by a score of 3-0. In this contest, the bright spot for the Tigers was Brianna Sotelo, who led the way on the stats sheet with 5 digs, 7 assists, and 1 kill.Â
Despite the disappointing results down in Bluefield today, Salem will be back in action and looking to get back on track when Slippery Rock comes to T. Edward Davis Gymnasium for a 6 PM contest on October 18th.
