PHILIPPI, West Virginia - With the West Virginia fall weather transitioning into cold winds and snow flurries, the competition in Rex Pyles Arena in Philippi was red hot. The Salem Tigers women's basketball team took on the Alderson Broaddus Battlers for a mid-week rivalry game. Salem was led again by an incredible performance from Nerea Arambarri Fernandez, and defeated the Battlers by a score of 94-67.Â
In the first quarter, Salem got off to a fantastic start as they hit some big shots early to take control of the game. Fueled by some big shots from the outside by Emerson Wells, Salem outscored Alderson Broaddus 28-16 in the first quarter.Â
In the second, the Battlers showed that they would not go away quietly, and they clawed back into the game off some key Tigers turnovers. However, Salem made some adjustments in the period, and maintained a 42-37 lead going into the break.Â
After the intermission, Salem kicked their offense into high gear behind some big shots from Nerea Arambarri Fernandez. Salem took their 5 point lead at the beginning up to a 18 point lead by the end of the quarter, and that was just the beginning of the offensive fireworks for the Tigers.Â
In the fourth, Salem took a stranglehold on the game as the lead ballooned to as much as 30. Arambarri Fernandez continued to run the Tigers offense with incredible efficiency. She was aided by some strong play from Anete Bluma and Elena Pericic, and Salem rolled to a big 94-67 win.Â
On the stats sheet, the clear star of the show was obviously Nerea Arambarri Fernandez with her career high 31 points alongside 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and a steal. She was followed up by Emerson Wells with 18 points, and Anna Machykova with 14 points. Anete Bluma also had a big night on the boards with 11 rebounds paired with her 7 points.Â
Salem will be looking to build off this big win as they prepare for their home opener against Saint Augustine's on Sunday, November 20th at Noon at T. Edward Davis Gymnasium.
