Salem Takes Down Wagner for First Time in History

BRONX, New York – The men's water polo team had a huge win today against Wagner College for the first time in the program's history. Yesterday, the Tigers traveled to the Bronx in New York to compete at Fordham in their conference championship weekend. The first match of the tournament for the men was against Wagner (4th seed). This was a difficult first match up for the men as they have lost to them twice this season. The pressure was on in this game however, as the winner advanced to the semi-final round of games to play for the top 4 spots in the conference. Salem came in as the underdogs this afternoon when they played the Seahawks. This clearly came as an advantage as they were able to win the game 17-13. This is quite the convincing score gap from the Tigers, showing how dominant they were in today's game – considering they had not been able to take down Wagner yet this season.

The Tigers came out of the gates strong scoring 8 goals to Wagner's 7. They managed to tally an impressive 9 goals in the second half whilst the Seahawks were just unable to keep up only putting 6 in the back of the net. This took the final score to 17-13. The entire team had an outstanding performance this afternoon. Ivan Zivojinovic led the Tigers with a total of 5 goals, and his brother Marko Zivojinovic closely behind him netting 4 goals. Manuel Soto Estela and Nikola Krstonoic tallied 3 goals for the Tigers. Nikola Cvetkovic rounded out the team with a total of 2 goals. Duarte Costa was in the cage for the tigers racking up a total of 13 saves. This was a phenomenal effort from all the men and directly reflects the hard work they have put in this season and the growth they have had. Their win today means the Tigers will face off against the No.1 seed Fordham tomorrow at 6pm EST. If they win, they will advance to the gold medal match and if they lose they will be playing off for 3rd position – all of which are fantastic achievements.

Additionally, Nikola Krstonosic and Marko Zivojinovic were both honored by the MAWPC prior to Friday's contests for thier excellent performances this season. Krstonosic was named to the All-Conference Second Team, and Zivojinovic was named to the All-Conference team via an honorable mention selection.
