WASHINGTON, DC - As the fall season of Salem athletics comes to an end next weekend, Salem women's basketball team was preparing to fill that gap as they tipped off their season with an exhibition matchup against the NCAA Division I Georgetown Hoyas. This was head coach Jessica Peatross' debut at the helm for the Tigers, but they came up short in the contest 77-46.
In the first period, Salem had their work cut out for them as the Hoyas jumped out to an early lead. From there, Salem found themselves trying to keep pace with the Georgetown offense for the rest of the game. Georgetown would push their advantage up to 22-6 after the first quarter.
For the second period, Salem had a tough time finding scoring chances as the Georgetown defense was stifling. However, Salem found some points from strong shooting from Jayla Atkins and Anete Bluma towards the end of the period. Unfortunately, Georgetown would still control the game by a score of 39-15 at the end of the half.
After the intermission, Salem tried to claw back into the game, and they found some of those points from strong offensive play from Elena Pericic and Daniela Quesada. The Hoyas were undeterred though, and carried a 59-29 lead into the final period.Â
In that final period, the Tigers had a big gap to fill in order to get back into the game. They made a strong effort to do just that based on some strong offensive play from Nerea Arambarri Fernanadez and Lilliani Krause. Despite the surge, Georgetown would cruise to a 77-49 win.Â
On the stats sheet, Salem was led by Elena Pericic who tallied an impressive 14 points, 6 rebounds, a block and a steal. Just behind her was Anete Bluma who put up 8 points, 4 rebounds, and a steal for the Tigers.Â
The exhibition portion of the season is a busy one for the Tiger's as they will be heading to Lynchburg, Virginia when they take on the NCAA Division I Liberty Flames on November 10th at 7 PM.
