Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Kaden Shoaf

Salem Uses Late Surge to Overcome Frostburg State

SALEM, West Virginia - The Salem women's basketball team had one last item to take care of before their New Year's Eve festivities this evening. That task was a tough matchup with Mountain East Conference foe Frostburg State. The Bobcats of Frostburg State controlled much of the game, but Salem was able to utilize a late 4th quarter surge to overcome them in the waning moments of the game to win 57-51.

For the first period, the game initially fell into a defensive gridlock as neither team found scoring the ball easy. Frostburg took a slight advantage, but some strong Tiger interior play from Liliani Krause and Jayla Atkins kept the game close. The Bobcats would still hold a 12-11 edge after the introductory quarter.

In the second, Salem had the tough task of keeping in step with the Frostburg State attack, and they were initially unsuccessful as the Bobcats lead grew to as much as 7. However, much like the first period, Salem was able to grind out some much needed points thanks to strong interior play from Aktins, Krause, and Anete Bluma. Frostburg State still held a tight lead after 2 quarters at 24-22.

In the third, Frostburg State did their best to grow their advantage and keep control of the game. Salem was not about to go away that easily, though. The Tigers found some keyshots from Anna Machytkova, but the Frostburg State control of the game was maintained after three by a score of 44-36.

For the 4th period, Salem faced their final chance to pry the game away from Frostburg State. Salem's comeback was furious, and was fueled by big three point shots from Bluma and Emerson Wells.  It was a Bluma three that gave the Tigers the lead, and the 57-51 victory was sealed with a set of Krause free throws down the stretch.

On the stats sheets, the star of the show was clearly Liliani Krause who ended up with 17 points and 9 rebounds. The Salem interior play was typified by Elena Pericic and Jayla Atkins who each brought down 10 rebounds.

While this second straight win is great for Salem women's basketball, it should only heighten their appetite for another win as they are set to take on West Virginia Wesleyan in their next home game on January 2nd at 2 PM.
