Baseball Falls in Season Opener

Savannah, GA – Salem University baseball traveled to Savannah State University to open the 2022 season with a three-game series.

Game One

Savannah State got on the board early in the first inning off of a ground out to short, bringing on across the plate. The home team added one in the third and two in the sixth to establish a 4-0 lead. Nathan Kuhn led off the seventh with a double down the left field line and later advanced himself to third. After a walk drawn by Brandon Gray and a stolen base, Luis Angarita singled to right field scoring two for Salem. Savannah State answered with eight runs in the last two innings to come away with a 12-2 victory.

Game Two

After two scoreless innings, Savannah State exploded with seven runs in the third. Brett Graham started the fourth with a single to left field followed by a walk from Conor Bardue. After a groundout to the pitcher advanced the runners to scoring position. A deep fly ball from Kuhn allowed Graham to score. Salem attempted a late rally with three in the sixth, but Savannah State scored two in the bottom of the sixth to take the 10-4 victory.

Game Three

Savannah State took the early lead after scoring one in the first. After five scoreless innings, Salem evened the score off of an error from Savannah State. Savannah State answered with two in the bottom of the inning to take back the lead. A single from Tyler Shinn brought Jared Palmyra home but was not enough to take down Savannah State in the final game of the series loosing 3-2. Jaryd Lund started on the mound for the Salem Tigers, giving up five hits, one run, a single walk, and nine strikeouts in seven innings.

Up Next

The Tigers will host Fairmont State Saturday, February 19th in a double header contest starting at 1 p.m.
