Morgantown, WV – Salem University softball fell to Wheeling University for their 2022 season opener double header 7-3 and 8-0 on Friday.
Game One
The Cardinals got on the board early in game one after a sacrifice fly brought one across the plate. The Tigers had a big three run inning in the fourth to go ahead 3-1. Mackenzie Ringer reached first on an error from the Cardinals. After a walk from Melanie Broderson, Jenna McCrary singled to right field to load the bases. Sierra Chapa brought in the first run for the Tigers after drawing the walk. Elaina Esteban showed up big for the Tigers with the left field single to bring in two. Wheeling answered with two runs in the fifth to tie it up 3-3. Wheeling took back the lead 7-3 after bringing in four in the sixth to take the victory over Salem.
Game Two
After three scoreless innings for both team, Wheeling got on the board in the fourth after a grand slam, a triple and single to take the 6-0 lead. The Tigers tried to get on the board in the fifth after a lead off double from Ringer but left the runner stranded at third. The Cardinals put two more on the board in the sixth to come away with the 8-0 win over Salem.
