Philippi, WV – Salem University men's basketball took down Alderson Broaddus University 84-77 on Monday.
Fonz Hale led all scorers with 33 points, six rebounds and four assists. Tobias Howard Jr. contributed 23 points and five rebounds followed by Rodney Smith with 12 points. Darius Bell led the rebounding for the Tigers with eight. The Tigers shot 83 percent from the line and 53 percent from the field.
R. Smith struck first with a three ball to take the lead. For the next four minutes of play, the score stayed within one with eight lead changes. The Tigers built their largest lead of the half at nine after a midrange jumper from Howard. The Tigers closed out the final minute of the first half outscoring AB 6-2 to go into the half with the 43-35 advantage.
The Tigers had their largest lead of the night a minute into the second half after Barron Tanner hit the three, 48-37. A trip to the line for AB tied it up at 68 with five minutes remaining. Back-to-back buckets from Hale and Bell put the Tigers back ahead by four. A last effort by AB pulled them within three with three minutes remaining; however, the effort of the Tigers would prove too much as Salem came away with the 84-77 victory.
