Salem, WV – Salem University men's basketball extend to 16-5 on the season after taking down Virginia State University 91-81 on Monday.
Tobias Howard Jr and Fonz Hale combined for 54 points, 10 rebounds and six assists on the night followed by Stan Smith with 12 and Barron Tanner with 11. The Tigers shot 54 percent from the field, including 16 threes, and 90 percent from the line.
The Trojans jumped out to an early lead, outscoring the Tigers 12-5 in the first five minutes of play. A three from Howard tied it up at the 13-minute mark before the Trojans hit back-to-back threes to go ahead by six. After multiple lead changes, a trip to the line for Hale put the Tigers ahead by two. A three at the buzzer the Trojans, took them into the half with the 42-41 over the Tigers.
The Tigers battled back, tying it at 50 at the 14-minute mark. The Tigers took the two-point lead midway through the half, but the Trojans quickly answered with a three-point possession to take back the lead, 59-58. A three from S. Smith gave the Tigers the two-point lead. The Trojans pulled within two at 7:23, but a 9-0 run from the Tigers was enough to come away with the 91-81 victory.
