FAIRMONT, West Virginia - Just as the women's match was relocated on Sunday afternoon, the Salem men's soccer game with Maine-Fort Kent was also moved out to Duvall-Rosier Field at Fairmont State University. The match was hard fought, but the Tigers would fall by a score of 3-2.Â
In the first half of the game, Salem fell behind initially as the Bengals took an early lead. However, they answered right back when Oluwaseun Babarinde found tha back of the net with a headed shot from a Ben Lam free kick. From there, the game would settle into a deadlock that held the score at 1-1 into the halftime break.Â
After the intermission, Salem found some tough breaks when the Bengals added 2 goals to jump out to the 3-1 lead. With the time winding down, the Salem comeback bid kicked it into high gear as they tried to find their way back into the game. They made one big step with another headed goal off of a free kick with Kaito Sawada scored off of a Marcelo Andrade pass to bring it to 3-2. However, the Salem goal came too late, and there was not quite enough time to add one more to even the score with the Bengals. Despite the strong comeback bid, Maine-Fort Kent came away with the 3-2 win.Â
On the stats sheet, there were still some bright spots for the Tigers. Both Kaito Sawada and Oluwaseun Babarinde found the scoring chances for Salem, and Marcelo Andrade and Ben Lam would each add 1 assist. In goal, Ruben Pijlman would add 5 saves to the efforts.Â
Despite the disappointing conclusion to today's match, the Salem men's soccer team will be back in action against Emory & Henry College on Wednesday, September 28th at 4 pm. That contest is currently scheduled for Salem's Catalano Stadium.
