ELIZABETH CITY, North Carolina - With their tough loss at home against Fairmont State last week, the Salem women's basketball team headed down to North Carolina for a rematch with the Elizabeth City State Vikings. The Vikings beat the Tigers in their first meeting this season, and Salem was unsuccessful in the rematch as they fell by a score of 65-46.Â
In the first period, Salem started off strong with some hot outside shooting from Emerson Wells to give the Tigers an early lead. However, the Vikings defense took control back, and proved to the Tigers that points were going to be hard to come by the rest of the night. At the end of the quarter, Salem trailed 23-13.Â
For the second, both teams struggled to score any points, and both teams scored just 9 points a piece. Salem's point came mostly from three point shots from Anete Bluma and Nerea Arambarri Fernandez, but the Vikings carried a 32-22 lead into the intermission.Â
After the break, Salem desperately needed to eat away at the Vikings lead, but found the scoring chances hard to come by. Daniela Quesada and Elena Pericic found the few scoring plays for the Tigers, but it would not be enough. Elizabeth City State still controlled the game after the third 44-35.Â
In the final period, the pressure was on for the Tigers as they saw the game slipping away from them. Emerson Wells made a big three pointer in the quarter, and Anna Machytkova played well with multiple points at the free throw line in the quarter. However, Elizabeth City State found their shooting stroke in the fourth, and they pulled away with a 65-46 win.Â
On the stats sheet, it was a rough day offensively for the Tigers with no player scoring in double figures. Nerea Arambarri and Emerson Wells led the way with 9 points apiece, and Daniela Quesada finished just behind them with 8 points.Â
Despite the tough night in North Carolina, the Salem women's basketball program still has ample opportunity to get back on track. They take on Bluefield State in their next contest in the first of two scheduled games the Tigers have against the Big Blue. That game is set for Saturday, January 28th at 2 PM in Bluefield, WV.
