LOCK HAVEN, PA- Last night the Tigers hit the road to take on the Lock Haven Bald Eagles for some regular-season volleyball action. Salem entered the night's match with a record of 5-17 looking to get back in the win column after a tough loss to Davis & Elkins.
Â
Lock Haven wasted no time in the opening set. They won the coin toss for the opening serve and put their offense on display. The Bald Eagles jumped out to a 10-2 lead and it seemed as if the fatigue from the long match earlier in the week was showing for Salem. Head coach, Matt Carpenter, went to his bench looking for an answer, but there was none to be found. The Tigers dropped the first set to the hosting Bald Eagles 25-12 and got their sights set on taking the next three.
Â
Salem was able to prevent Lock Haven from gaining an early advantage in the second set, but they were unable to establish a lead themselves. The two teams traded points with one another in a match that looked even in the early stages. Lock Haven ripped off a 5-0 run to take a six-point lead, but Salem was not going away easily. The Tigers responded by stringing together several smaller runs to stay in the set. Salem got within one point of Lock Haven and was able to take the match before the Bald Eagles gave one final push. They ended the set on an 8-0 run and claimed the second set 25-16.
Â
The third set got underway and Salem was looking to get to a fourth and keep their hopes of winning alive. The Tigers came out swinging, but their lack of depth was certainly cause for concern at this point. Down two to injury the girls had to dig deep to make up for the lost bodies on the bench. Lock Haven took advantage, using their depth to keep fresh legs on the court to give them the upper hand. The Tigers fought tooth and nail in the third set, but the depth of the Bald Eagles proved too much for a depleted Tiger roster. Salem dropped the third set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
Â
The Tigers are back in action Friday, October 27th at 7pm on their home court as they take on West Virginia Wesleyan.
