Salem Struggles at Home in Loss to Cedarville

SALEM, WV - The Tigers (3-8) were back on their home court this afternoon to host the visiting Yellow Jackets (2-6) of Cedarville University. Salem came into the day's matchup looking to continue to build after an impressive victory against Slippery Rock on the road.

It was all Cedarville in the early stages of this afternoon's game. The Yellow Jackets jumped out on the Tigers and grabbed a commanding lead at 13-4. Down big in the first the Tigers refused to roll over. They put together a 12-6 run to end the quarter where everyone on the court seemed to be clicking. At the end of one Cedarville maintained the lead 19-16.

Salem looked to the paint presence of Liliani Krause in the second quarter to try and establish some interior presence while also getting the Yellow Jackets into foul trouble before the half. The Tigers struggled to get consistent good looks on offense throughout the remainder of the quarter. They would show spurts where they could easily score followed by two to three minutes without a basket. Cedarville on the other hand had found something in their offense they liked. They put up big numbers in the second to extend their lead to sixteen by halftime with a score of 44-28.

The early quarter struggles continued for the Tigers in the third where they managed just seven points in the first seven minutes of the quarter. Once again the Tigers found their rhythm late in the period. Anna Machytkova drew contact on a layup attempt and her free throw seemed to spark the Tiger offense. Salem went on to score seven points in the closing three minutes of the quarter, but they still found themselves down 61-42.

The theme of early offensive struggles remained true for Salem in the fourth. After four and a half minutes of fourth-quarter action, the Tigers got into the scoring column with a tough and-one from Elena Pericic who converted the free throw. The Tigers outscored the Yellow Jackets 16-8 down the stretch, but it was too little too late as the Tigers dropped to (3-9) on the season after a 77-58 loss on their home court.

The Tigers are off over the holiday and will be resuming action on January 10th at their home

court against the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston.
