SALEM, West Virginia - After a big win on the road earlier in the week, the Salem men's basketball team returned home to the friendly confines of T. Edward Davis Gymnasium for a mid-week bash against Central Pennsylvania College. The home court advantage was in full force for the Tigers, and they rode a career night from Stan Smith to a 108-72 win over the Knights.Â
In the first half, it was abundantly clear from the opening basket of the game for the Tigers that Stan Smith was set for a career night. Smith opened the game with three straight three pointers, and accounted for 11 of the Tiger's first 14 points. The Knights of Central Pennsylvania kept the game close early on, but Salem truly controlled the flow of the game with their offensive firepower and their significant size advantage down low. Justin Tene and Ashraf Tchadouwa controlled the paint for much of the contest. Stan Smith continued to be the hottest hand offensively for Salem, and he finished the half with a total of 28 points. In comparison, the whole of the Central Pennsylvania team scored 28 points in the first half. Therefore, the Tigers held a 56-28 lead going into the locker rooms at the half.Â
In the second half, Salem continued to dominate the contest with Fope Okuyiga, Ian Hardy, and Kapone Barley scoring in tandem with Stan Smith's continued dominance. Walker Moreland also hit a number of big shots for the Tigers down the stretch, and Salem cruised to a crushing 108-72 home win over the Knights.Â
On the stats sheet, the obvious star of the show was Stan Smith who earned a double double for his 47 point and 13 rebound performance. That 47 point game ties a high for Salem this season. Rodney Smith had the other 47 point performance for the Tigers back in January in a win over Tiffin. Additionally, it is the most any Tiger has scored in one game dating back to 2012. Not to be overshadowed, Walker Moreland and Ashraf Tchadouwa also scored in double figures for the Tigers with 11 and 10 points respectively. Justin Tene also pulled down 13 rebounds for Salem.Â
After this impressive performance from Salem at home, they should be able to take some newfound energy with them when they take on the Young Harris College for their next game. That contest will be played at 6 PM on Monday, February 13th.
