ERIE, Pennsylvania - After a tough loss at West Virginia State yesterday, Salem's baseball team got right back into the thick of it when they headed up to Erie, Pennsylvania to take on the Mercyhurst Lakers. While the Tigers competed well, they came up short in both contests with the Lakers. Those contests played out as follows:
Mercyhurst 13, Salem 0
In the first contest, Salem had a tough time finding scoring chances despite logging 7 hits in the contest. Kaiden Zacharias and Sam Schmitt each had multiple hits for the Tigers, but they could not quite find a way to get their runners around. On the pitcher's mound, starter Frankie Gulko, Evan Bell, Keith Wallace, and Zach Kendall combined for a total of 8 strikeouts in the outing.Â
Mercyhurst 3, Salem 2Â
For Game 2, we had a much closer contest on our hands. Neither team found much offensively until the 8th inning when Mercyhurst took a 3-0 lead. The game progressed from there into the final two innings when Salem attempted a comeback. It was kicked off by a Kaiden Zacharias solo home run in the 6th inning, and Luis Angarita added an RBI single to score Trey Hissam in the 7th. However, those two runs would not be enough to overcome the Lakers, and Salem fell again 3-2. On the bump, Sam Schmitt pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts while allowing just two hits.Â
While these contests were less than ideal for the Tigers, Salem will have another chance to get back on track tomorrow when they take on another team of Lakers. This time, the Lakers of Grand Valley State will take on Salem in Erie at 11 AM for a 9 inning contest.
