Salem Gets Second Win in Florida over D’Youville

LEESBURG, Florida - After defeating Saint Thomas Aquinas yesterday, the Salem softball team was ready to make their stay in Florida at The Spring Games even sweeter by adding some more victories to their resume. While they stumbled initially today against Saint Michael's, they bounced back with a gritty 2-1 win over D'Youville in dramatic fashion. Both games played out as follows:

Saint Michael's 13, Salem 1

In Game 1, the Tigers had a tough time getting their offense going initially. Saint Michael's controlled the game early on, but Salem responded with their lone run of the contest on a RBI single from Meesha Arroyo that scored Victoria Castro. However, the Purple Knights overpowered the Tigers, and quickly bolted out to a 13-1 scoreline to end the contest after 5 innings.

Salem 2, D'Youville 1

For Game 2, Salem had a much closer contest on their hands. The Saints took control in the second with a solo home run, but the Tigers kept the Saints scoreless the rest of the way to keep themselves within striking distance. They found their chance in the 6th with 4 straight singles to open the inning. It was the third single from the bat of Ricki Garay that scored the tying run for the Tigers by bringing home Meladie LaRance. That run knotted up the game, and Salem found the go ahead run in the final inning. After Elaina Esteban singled and advanced to second on a D'Youville error, it brought up Sierra Chapa. Chapa layed down a perfectly placed bunt and put her speed on full display to leg it out for a hit. That bunt single then allowed Esteban to score and Salem walked off with a dramatic 2-1 over D'Youville. From the pitcher's circle, Andrea Gallegos pitched a complete game in the contest and notched her third win of the season.

With another tight win under their belt, Salem Softball will be looking for more tomorrow in their final day of competition at the Spring Games. They are set to take on Alliance University at 11 AM, and Le Moyne at 1:30 PM in Leesburg, Florida.
