BUCKHANNON, West Virginia - After a triumphant pair of wins back home in Bridgeport on Saturday, the Salem softball team had a chance to build on that success on Tuesday afternoon. Salem was slated to host local rivals West Virginia Wesleyan, but a scheduling conflict forced the contests back to Buckhannon, even though Salem still played as the "home" team. Unfortunately, the Tigers fell in both contests. Each game played out as follows:
West Virginia Wesleyan 2, Salem 0
In Game 1, Salem found themselves in a defensive battle. The Tigers managed a pair of hits in the contest, but a narrow West Virginia Wesleyan edge was established in the 4th and 5th innings. Without any runs of their own, Salem fell in a defensive battle 2-0 in 7 innings. Pitcher Andrea Gallegos went the distance for the Tigers, and allowed just 2 runs on 8 hits.
West Virginia Wesleyan 10, Salem 2
For the second contest of the day, we had a much different sort of ballgame on our hands. Instead of a defensive gridlock, the Bobcats quickly jumped out to a 8-0 lead after 4 innings. Salem managed a rally in the bottom of that same 4th inning. They added 2 runs off of a Meesha Arroyo single that brought in Sierra Chapa and Jazmyn Moetului. However, that would not be enough to fuel a Tigers comeback, and the Tigers fell 10-2 when the Bobcats added 2 more runs in the 5th. In the pitcher's circle, Meesha Arroyo, Emily Villar, and Andrea Gallegos all made appearances for the Tigers in the game.Â
While today's score lines certainly did not fall the Salem way, the Tigers will need to put that behind them quickly as they are back in action this week. They head up to Canton, Ohio to rematch with the Malone Pioneers at 1 PM on Wednesday, April 19th.
