Salem Hangs Tough in Weekend Series with Mansfield

This Friday and Saturday the tigers played two double headers against Mansfield University. Salem managed to split the first two Friday games against the mountaineers but dropped both days 2 games. The first game of the series the tigers went down 2-6 however they made an impressive comeback in game 2 with a 5-0 win. Day 2 was just as competitive with the tigers only going down 2-3, then taking a 1-4 loss in the second game.

Day One

In game one of the series the tigers opened up the scoring in the 1st inning when Luis Angarita stole home base. The next run occurred when Ben Matos singled letting Nathan Kuhn score. Angarita recorded 2 hits that game and Jacob Hurley, Trey Hissam, Ben Matos and Ethyn Barnitz all recorded a single hit. Game 2 of the day left the mounties completely scoreless, thanks to a brilliant 7-inning performance by Sam Schmitt who recorded an outstanding 13 strikeouts. On the offensive side the game was opened when Barnitz scored on a passed ball that also advanced Angarita to 2nd and Jose Lojo to 3rd. Brett Ehr then tripled allowing both men on base to score. To round out the inning Kaiden Zacharias hit a single brining home Ehr. In the 4th inning Sam Schmitt was on base and Lojo single bringing Schmitt home. Lojo and Ehr each recorded 2 hits in game 2 and Zacharias, Schmitt and Hissam all recorded 1.

Day 2

On day two the first run of the game was thanks to a sacrifice fly out to right field by Nathan Kuhn which allowed Kaiden Zacharias to score. The tigers were unable to score again until the 7th inning when Kuhn hit a home run which was not enough to catch Mansfield who had tallied 3 runs in the 5th and 6th inning. Zacharias, Kuhn and Lojo each recorded one hit. The second game proved to be more difficult for Salem, they scored their first and only run in the last inning when Nathan Kuhn singled brining home Luis Angarita. Kuhn recorded 2 hits this game and Jacob Hurley and Jose Lojo each had 1 hit.

Salem doesn't have much time to linger on the trials of this series as they are back in action on Tuesday in Buckhannon against West Virginia Wesleyan College at 1pm. They then play at home on Wednesday against Wesleyan again before heading to the University of North Georgia on Friday.
