DUBOIS, Pennsylvania - After a dominant win over Florida National yesterday, Salem's softball team had a chance to push on to the championship round of the USCAA Small College World Series. Unfortunately, the Tigers fell in both contests they played today, and concluded their stay in Dubois a day early. Both contests played out as follows:
Penn State Brandywine 1, Salem 0
In Game 1, Salem matched up with Penn State Brandywine in the semifinal contest of the tournament. Salem found themselves in a defensive battle with scoring chances very difficult to come by. Salem had a few chances off of 5 hits in the contest, but Penn State Brandywine found the lone run of the contest in the 4th. In the pitcher's circle, Meesha Arroyo got the start for the Tigers and pitched 5 solid innings with 2 strikeouts. Andrea Gallegos relieved her in the final frame, and added one strikeout to the Tiger's efforts on the day. With that loss, Salem was sent to an elimination game against the Mississippi University of Women.
Mississippi University of Women 8, Salem 2
In Game 2, the Tigers had their work cut out for them early as a hot Owls squad added 3 runs early on. The Tigers answered back when Jazmyn Moetului knocked in a run off a single in the 3rd inning. Mackenzie Ringer followed that up with an RBI double to bring home Moetului to bring the game within a single run. However, the Owls added resurgent 5th and 6th innings to bring the game up to the final score of 8-2. Salem got another combined outing from Arroyo and Gallegos, and they combined for 2 strikeouts on the day. With this contest concluding Salem's stay in Dubois, Jazmyn Moetului was honored after the event for her efforts for the Tigers with an All-Tournament Team selection.
This pair of losses wraps up the 2023 spring campaign for head coach Steve Potts and the Salem softball program. They reached 21 wins, a program high since the 2016 season, and will be looking to build on this success in the 2024 season.
