ELKINS, West Virginia - Eager to get the sour taste of their last contest out of their mouths, the Salem men's soccer team took the field this afternoon to face off with the Davis & Elkins Senators. It was a dramatic and tightly contested match throughout, and it resulted in a 2-2 draw.
The scoring got going early for the Tigers with Dylan Vaughn finding the back of the net just moments into the contest off of a pass from Ricardo Gallego Curto. The Senators fired right back with a goal of their own just minutes later, and we had a 1-1 deadlock after just 5 minutes of play. From there, each team exchanged runs, but neither could truly control the contest. Therefore, we went into the halftime break with a tight 1-1 ballgame.
In the second, things got tough for Salem quickly with another Senators goal about 10 minutes into the half. However, the Tigers kept the pressure on with a goal of their own just minutes later thanks to a Carter Block shot that was set up by Giancarlo Pardo. With the 2-2 scoreline, the Tigers put everything they had into breaking the gridlock. Despite the Senators playing with a man down for most of the second half, Salem could just not quite find that final edge they needed to take control of the game. Therefore, the Tigers headed back home with a well fought 2-2 draw.
From the score sheet, Salem was led by the goals of Dylan Vaughn and Carter Block. Ricardo Gallego Curto and Giancarlo Pardo each added assists on those scores, and goalkeeper Josh Hills tallied up 3 saves in the contest.
While not the ideal result for the Tigers, this contest still has a lot for Salem to build off of for their next contest. That match will be on October 16th at 2:30 PM when the Frostburg State Bobcats come to The Bridge Sports Complex in Bridgeport, West Virginia to face off with the Tigers for the second time this season.
