ATHENS, West Virginia - In the first leg of back to back road contests for the Tigers, Salem headed down to the southern part of the state this evening to take on the Concord Mountain Lions. It was a tightly contested matchup throughout, but it was an experienced Concord squad that pulled out the win in straight sets.
In the opening frame, Salem got things rolling quickly with some big kills from Hailey Haynes and Makenna Long. The Tigers hung tough with Concord, but it was a pair of Mountain Lion surges late in the set that won set 1 for Concord 25-13.
For set 2, Salem faced some adversity early when the Mountain Lions jumped out to an early lead. However, head coach Matt Carpenter's squad regrouped and uncorked a furious comeback bid to reclaim a slim 24-22 lead. However, another Concord rally did the Tigers in, and Salem dropped set 2 28-26.
For the final set, Salem got off to another hot start. Noemi Combi and Sydney Kopshina opened things up with a pair of kills right off the bat. However, the experienced Mountain Lion lineup was able to quell Salem's offensive attack to win set 3 25-13, and therefore the contest 3-0.
From the scorer's table, Salem got a strong performance out of Noemi Combi with 7 kills, and Hailey Haynes with 3 blocks. Kayla Holbrook added 15 digs, and Katie Kennedy tallied 16 assists on the night.
While not the result the Salem faithful were looking for, there is still a lot to build on for the Tigers' next contest. That will be on the road against the Glenville State Pioneers on October 18th at 7 PM down in Gilmer County.
