SALEM, West Virginia - After a tough result against Slippery Rock on Saturday, the Salem women's basketball team got right back onto the court this afternoon for an afternoon bash against the Walsh Cavaliers. Unfortunately, a slow start offensively plagued the Tigers, and that resulted in a 73-49 win for the Cavaliers.
In the first quarter, the Tigers fell behind initially 7-0. A quick timeout to regroup got Salem going offensively with a shift of focus to the strong interior play of Liliani Krause and Carmen Vasquez. Despite the late surge, Salem trailed 18-10 after the first.
In the second, the Tigers kept the pressure on and slowly clawed their way back into the game. Carine Pinkney and Kamryn Ruffin hit some key baskets for the Tigers down the stretch, but Salem went into the break with a 36-24 deficit.
After the intermission, Walsh jumped out to a 18 point lead with a strong start offensively. Salem battled back and cut the lead down to 45-33, but a late Cavalier rally rounded out the quarter at 50-35.
In the final frame, Salem had a big hole to fill in order to get back into the contest. They made a valiant effort with some strong offensive work from Ruffin, but the comeback bid was simply too little too late for the Tigers. Therefore, Walsh pulled away with a 73-49 win over Salem.
Statistically, there is a silver lining for the Tigers as they got some strong showings from new faces. Kamryn Ruffin finished the contest with 14 points to lead Salem. Just behind her was Carine Pinkney and Carmen Vasquez with 10 points each.
With today's loss, Salem will have some time to regroup ahead of their next contest. The Tigers head up to Wheeling for that matchup on November 23rd at 2 PM.
