CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee - After the cold weather of Northeast Ohio and central West Virginia, the Salem Tigers women's basketball team was looking forward to some warmer conditions for their long road trip this weekend down to Chattanooga. The Tigers matched up with their second NCAA Division I foe this season, but ultimately fell 93-34.
In the first quarter, the Tigers took early control of the game when Cassandra Smith opened the contest with a three pointer. However, the Mocs quickly took control of the game back, and held a 24-8 advantage after the first.Â
In the second, it was a tough stretch for the Tigers offensively with the only scoring coming from some strong shooting from Taja Stephens. Otherwise, the Mocs locked things down defensively, and Salem trailed 45-11 going into the intermission.Â
After the break, Kamryn Ruffin found some much needed offensive output for Salem coming out of the locker room, but the Tigers still had a big hole to fill. Chattanooga held a 67-24 lead after the third.Â
In the final frame, Salem again had a tough time getting things going offensively. Liliani Krause and Cassandra Smith made some difference for the Tigers in the period, but it was simply not enough to catch up to the Mocs on their home floor. Therefore, Salem fell by a final score of 93-34.Â
In the scorebook, Salem was led by 15 points from Cassandra Smith. She was the only Tiger in double figures with Taja Stephens finishing behind her with 6 points.Â
After an extended break for the holidays, Salem is back in action on January 8th at 5:30 PM when they head down to Institute to take on the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State.
