GLENVILLE, West Virginia - With the holiday break now in the rearview mirror, the Salem Tigers women's basketball team took the trip down to Gilmer County this morning for a rare mid-morning matchup with the Glenville State Pioneers. It was a tough day for Salem offensively, and a hot shooting Pioneers team quickly outpaced Salem 120-51.
In the first quarter, Glenville State jumped out to an early lead, but Salem responded with a late run led by Carine Pinkney and Cassandra Smith to bring the game up to 21-13 after one.
In the second, the Tigers had a tough time keeping pace with the Pioneers. Kamryn Ruffin got the bulk of the scoring for Salem in the quarter, but the game went into the half with the Tigers trailing 58-22.
In the third, it was unfortunately more of the same. The Tigers had their bright spots with strong play from Kori Pillette and Taja Stephens, but the game progressed into the final frame with Salem behind 83-33.
In the fourth, the Tigers had a hole to fill, and needed to put together a big push to get things close. Liliani Krause made her mark in the paint for Salem, but the comeback bid fell short. Therefore, the Tigers were sent back home with a 120-51 loss.
On the stats sheet, Salem did have three players scoring in double figures. Carine Pinkney led the way with 12 points. Cassandra Smith and Taja Stephens finished just behind her with 10 points each.
Despite today's setbacks, the Tigers still have a long season to get things right. They head back home for their next contest against the Concord Mountain Lions. That game will be played on Saturday, December 7th at 2 PM.
