CHARLESTON, West Virginia - With the winter weather bringing snow to the majority of the Mountain State, the Salem Men's Basketball team braved the conditions and made the drive down I-79 to take on the University of Charleston Golden Eagles. This was the third and final contest against the Golden Eagles this season, but it did not end well for the Tigers. Salem fell by a final score 108-65 down in the State Capital.
For the first half, Salem got off to a slow start, and the Golden Eagles made the most of it with some hot shooting out of the gate. Salem kept their focus however and battled their way back into the game. Ian Hardy got the ball rolling for the Tigers, and Khemanni Davis came off the bench to add some scoring punch for the Tigers. Salem whittled the Golden Eagles lead down to 12, but Charleston answered right back late in the half. Both teams went into the locker room with the scoreline at 50-35 favoring the Golden Eagles.
For the second half, Salem had their work cut out for them against a Charleston offensive attack that showed no signs of slowing down. The Tigers made a valiant effort to battle back in the second half, and made some strides with Davis and Kapone Barley both hitting key shots for Salem. However, it was too little too late to keep up with Charleston, and Salem ended up making the long drive back home with a 108-65 loss.
From the scorebook, Salem got another impressive performance from Khemanni Davis with 26 points off the bench for his third 20 plus point performance of the season. Kapone Barley added 15 points, and Ian Hardy rounded out the Tigers in double figures with 11 points.
With this game behind them, Salem will be looking to reset ahead of one of their biggest contests of the season. One can expect a big crowd for a historic rivalry game in T. Edward Davis Gymnasium when Salem takes on the Fairmont State Falcons on February 21st at 7:30 PM in at home in Salem, West Virginia.
