NUTTER FORT, West Virginia - Salem returned to their home field for their second doubleheader of the weekend following a two-game series against Mercyhurst that Salem split 1-1.
GAME ONE (Seven Innings)
Colby Schueber took the mound for the Tigers in game one of the afternoon and got things underway against the Oiler lineup. Findlay had the long ball working early in their offense, striking first with a solo shot and following that up with a three-run blast to tack four runs on the board for the Oilers in the first inning. Mackenzie Wainwright had a response for the Tigers when he took one out of the park to score himself along with Nathan Kuhn and Jose Lojo to make it a 4-3 ball game. Findlay was able to add some insurance to their one-run lead in the top of the fourth off of an RBI single making it a 5-3 ball game. The Tigers turned over the pitching duties to reliever Zack Kendall for the fifth who was able to get just two outs before being replaced by Richie Preston. The Oilers' offense stayed hot, adding two more runs in the fifth inning. Salem got back into it in the bottom of the inning when Jose Lojo was able to touch home thanks to a wild pitch from Findlay, but Salem still found themselves in a hole and needed a few shut-out innings to help their comeback case. The Oiler offensive showcase continued into the sixth when they hit their third home run of the day to grow their lead to four runs at 8-4. After a scoreless bottom of the inning, Salem looked to reliever Tyler Sammons to get through the seventh. Findlay got on Sammons early and forced the Tigers' hand to bring in another pitcher to get the final out. Jaxon Lehr would be the final pitcher to represent Salem for game one which the Tigers would go on to lose 14-6 after allowing six runs in the top of the seventh.
GAME TWO (Nine Innings)
It was Jaryd Lund who was sent out as the Tiger's first arm in the afternoon's final matchup between the two schools. Lund got into his groove early and began to seemingly right the ship after a rough prior game for the Tiger's pitching staff. He got through two scoreless before giving up an RBI single in the top of the third to score the first run of game two for the Oilers. Brett Ehr had a response in the bottom of the inning when he went yard to tie the game 1-1. Findlay kept their momentum going in the fourth, scoring off a triple to regain the lead, but once again Salem was able to prevent the Oilers from scoring multiple runs in the inning. The Tiger offense came up empty in the bottom of the fourth, and Findlay took advantage by tacking on another run from a dropped third strike, giving the Oilers a 3-1 lead. The Tigers tied it up with a two-RBI single from Jacob Hurley in the fifth that scored both Mackenzie Wainwright and Nathan Kuhn in the bottom of the fifth. Travis Lavendier, who had been brought in to start the fifth, continued to deal for the Tigers and gave them a clean top of the sixth to set the Salem offense up. Brett Ehr got things started off with a solo home run to give Salem their first lead of the afternoon at 4-3. Mackenzie Wainwright followed that with a well-struck ball for extra bases that scored Luis Angarita to give the Tigers some cushion. Lavendier continued his scoreless efforts in the seventh and eighth innings for the Tigers. Salem caught fire in the eighth. Tyler Shinn got things rolling with a two-RBI single that scored Jose Lojo and Brett Ehr making the score 7-3 in Salem's favor. Then Jacob Hurley continued to pile it on with a two-RBI double that scored Tyler Shinn and Mackenzie Wainwright. The RBI train continued with Max Atkinson's single which scored Aidan McMurdo and Jacob Hurley. The Tigers weren't done just yet. Atkinson was rewarded for his efforts by Luis Angarita who scored him on a single, and Salem's final run of the inning came off a Jose Lojo single that sent Brett Ehr across the dish to make it 13-3 Tigers. Jhayden Raineri was given the ball to record the final three outs for the Tigers. Raineri gave up one run to Findlay off a solo shot, but other than that he remained composed and delivered for Salem in a 13-4 win.
Salem will continue their home stand on March 16th when they host West Virginia Wesleyan College at 12:00 and 2:00 PM.
