BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia - After a tough split on Friday afternoon, the Salem softball team took on another central West Virginia opponent in their Saturday matchup at home. This time it was the Senators of Davis and Elkins College. The Tigers played the Senators tough, but came up short in both contests. Each one played out as follows:
Davis & Elkins 2, Salem 0
In Game 1, the Tigers were faced with another defensive battle that saw neither team make any great strides offensively. The Senators opened the scoring with runs in the 2nd and 3rd, but the Tigers battled to keep things close. Salem thought they had the beginnings of a rally in the third with singles from Sierra Chapa, Abigail Harki, and Meladie LaRance to load the bases, but they were unable to bring anyone home from there. The defensive gridlock continued, and Salem fell in a tight 2-0 ball game in Game 1. Offensively, Salem was led by Kayla Willams and Sierra Chapa, who each had a pair of hits on the day. In the pitcher's circle, Andrea Gallegoes and Kendall Lemley combined to strike out a pair of Senators in the contest.
Davis & Elkins 10, Salem 0
For Game 2, the offensive woes continued for the Tigers. Salem got a few runners on base, but did not log a hit until a Charlee Johnson double in the 4th. Unfortunately, the Senators controlled the game throughout after a 3 run home run in the 1st inning, and sent Salem away with the 10-0 loss in 5 innings. In the pitcher's circle, a platoon system of Brooke Wise, Kendall Lemley, Andrea Gallegoes, and Destiny Coble handled the pitching duties for Salem.Â
While today's contests did not go the Tigers way, Salem will need to bounce back quickly as they are set to take on Pitt-Johnstown on Monday, April 1st at 2 PM.
