LEESBURG, Florida - After opening play yesterday at The Spring Games, Salem was looking to get back on track with another pair of contests for their second day of competition. This time around, Salem took on Dominican (NY) and Minnesota-Crookston down in Leesburg, Florida. Salem showed some improvements over their play from Day 1, but were unable to secure a victory in either contest. They played out as follows:
Dominican (NY) 8, Salem 4
For Game 1, Salem took on the Chargers at Dominican University of New York. The Tigers bolted out to a quick start thanks to back to back doubles from Meladie LaRance and Kaydee Anderson. LaRance scored Anderson on her hit, and Salem had their first lead of the contest. Dominican answered with a run of their own in the next inning, but then cracked the game wide open in the third with 7 runs. Salem needed to put together a rally of their own and quickly. They found their chance in the 4th inning.. Kaydee Anderson knocked in a 2 RBI single, and then Meladie LaRance added a sacrifice fly to bring the 4th Tigers run home. Unfortunately, Salem's comeback ended there, and the Tigers left with the 8-4 loss. In the pitcher's circle, starter Brooke Wise and relievers Andrea Gallegos and Franchesca Alvaro combined for a total of 3 strikeouts.Â
Minnesota-Crookston 6, Salem 3
For Game 2, Salem matched up with Minnesota-Crookston, Salem's furthest traveled opponent to date. It was a tough matchup from the first pitch with the Golden Eagles, and Salem fell behind early. The Tigers answered right away by taking the lead in the 2nd inning. Brooke Wise opened things up with a double, and then Mya Tucker got the Tigers on the board with a RBI single. Karmen Hogan followed that up with a 2 RBI single that brought in Tucker and Marissa Jeffery. With the pressure building, Crookston answered with a rally of their own to make it 5-3 in the bottom of the second. The Golden Eagles then sealed the victory with an insurance run down the stretch. In the pitcher's circle, Kendall Lemley had a decent outing with the complete game where she recorded 2 strikeouts.Â
The Tigers will have a day off in advance of Day 3 of their Florida excursion on Monday, March 11th. Salem will be taking on Southern Connecticut State at 10 AM, and then Missouri-Saint Louis at 12:30 PM. Both contest will be played in Auburndale, Florida.
