FROSTBURG, Maryland - In the first game of their three game road swing, the Salem Tigers men's soccer team took a trip up to Maryland to face off with the Frostburg State Bobcats. The Tigers played well throughout the contest in rainy conditions, but were unable to overcome a 2-1 deficit after 90 minutes.
In the first half, Salem hit the ground running despite the slick playing surface. They opened up with a goal from Josue Villegas just about 8 minutes into the contest. Aldair Cardenas assisted him on the play, and Salem controlled the contest initially. However, the Bobcats roared right back with a goal of their own later in the half, and Salem went into the break with a 1-1 deadlock.
After the intermission, Salem needed to claw control of the game back if they were going to push towards their second win of the season. Unfortunately, it would be the Bobcats who found that edge with a goal in the 52nd minute. From there, the Tigers kept the pressure up to find that scoring chance they needed to draw back level with the Bobcats. They had a number of chances from shots by the aforementioned Villegas and Nicolas Vieyra, but Salem could not quite find that crucial point. Therefore, the Tigers headed back home with a 2-1 loss at the hands of Frostburg State.
On the score sheet, Josue Villegas led the Tigers offensively with 1 goal on 3 shots. Felipe Gonzalez Maldonado, Nicholas Vieyra, and Aldair Cardenas all logged shots on goal for the Tigers. In goal, Jason Barrientos tallied a lone save in his second start for the Tigers this season.
After this loss, Salem will need to reset quickly as they still have their work cut out for them in their next contest. They head down south to face off with regional power Charleston on September 23rd at 6 PM.
