Tigers Drop Home Contest to Frostburg State

SALEM, West Virginia - In the second leg of a brief home stand for the Tigers, Salem played host to the lone Maryland representative of the Mountain East Conference, namely the Frostburg State Bobcats. It was a close game most of the way, but a second half surge for the Bobcats spoiled Salem's night with the Tigers falling 72-47.

In the first quarter, neither team had a great start offensively, and the Tigers even took an initial lead at 4-0 thanks to a pair of Cassandra Smith jumpers. Frostburg State rallied late in the period, and the scoreboard favored the Bobcats at 11-6 after the first period.

In the second quarter, Salem began to find an offensive groove. They whittled down the Bobcat lead to just 28-24 going into the break behind some hot outside shooting from Taja Stephens.

After the intermission, the Tigers got right back at it. They continued their 2nd quarter surge, and got within a basket of the Bobcats. However, Frostburg State also found their footing offensively and rode a big run late in the period to a 54-34 lead going into the 4th quarter.

In that final frame, Salem threw everything they had into building one last big scoring surge. They got a valiant effort out of Brooklynn Medina and Kori Pillette down the stretch, but it was simply too little too late. Ultimately, Frostburg State made their way back to Maryland with a 72-47 win.

Statistically, Salem was led by 13 points from Taja Stephens. Cassandra finished just behind her with 12 points to round out the Tigers scoring in double figures.

While the home loss stings, Salem has a big chance to get things back on track this weekend with a local rivalry game matchup on the road. They take on the Fairmont State Falcons on Saturday, January 18th at 2 PM up in Marion County.
