BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Salem University men's soccer earned a 1-1 draw with West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night, holding the lead for more than 80 minutes before the Bobcats struck late.
The Tigers wasted no time getting on the board, as Tommy Sowinski finished in the 7th minute to give Salem a 1-0 advantage. The goal was one of two Salem shots on target in the match, as the Tigers looked to protect their early lead.
Goalkeeper Jason Barrientos anchored the defense with two saves, including a first-half stop on a close-range effort from Adam Gribben. The back line, led by Ahmad Hijaz, Dylan Vaughn, and CJ Branch, absorbed consistent second-half pressure as Wesleyan pressed for the equalizer.
The Bobcats finally broke through in the 87th minute, when Casey Bunker converted off an assist from Chris Gonzalez. Moments later, Wesleyan's Henry Coster was shown a red card, but Salem couldn't capitalize on its final two corner kicks before the whistle.
Salem returns home for thier next contest as they are scheduled to play the Concord Mountain Lions on Sunday, October 6th at 3 PM from The Bridge Sports Complex in Bridgeport, West Virginia.
