Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - With a string of tough losses of late, the Salem women's volleyball team broke their regular routine of competition and made the trip up to the Steel City today to take on the La Roche Cardinals. The change of pace seemed to do wonders for the Tigers as they cruised to the 3-0 win in the contest.
The Tigers had their work cut out for them early as the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in set 1. Salem battled back and took control behind some strong play from Katie Kennedy and Valentina Poti. From there, the Tigers held off an effective Cardinal attack and pulled out the tight 25-23 win.
In set 2, the Salem offense found a good rhythm and controlled the game for the entire set. Alexandra Vigneron and Ana Julia Avila Vian pushed the Tigers ahead to the 25-15 set win.
In the final set, the Tigers actually trailed for quite awhile, but a 8 point swing fueled by some big swings from Marika Righi put the Tigers took Salem from down 15-12 to leading 19-15. From there, Salem rolled to the 25-20 set win and the overall 3-0 victory.
Statistically, Salem was led offensively by 13 kills from Marika Righi. Amari Nunez had a strong day with 21 assists. Ana Julia Avila Vian contributed 19 digs in the contest as well.
The Tigers are set to host old rival Fairmont State on Tuesday, October 7th for their next contest. That game is set to begin at 7 PM.
