Tigers Bested in Shootout at Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Maryland- As the snowy conditions continued across the mountain state, the Salem Tigers men's basketball team traveled to Maryland on Wednesday for their next contest. The Tigers made the trip up to Frostburg looking to pull off the road victory against the Bobcats. Unfortunately, despite the offensive explosion for the Tigers they were bested in an absolute shootout. Frostburg State defeated Salem 112-107.

In the first half, the Tigers faced adversity quickly falling to a 10-0 deficit in the opening minutes of play. Fortunately, the Tigers were able to erase that deficit quickly as they were only down 14-16 with 15 minutes left in the half. Kapone Barley made a few layups around the 12-minute mark, but Frostburg still held a 26-21 lead. Moments later, the Tigers would knot the game up at 26 after Kevin Constant hit a layup and a free throw. AJ Martiniello hit a three at the 5:40 mark to give Salem the 35-33 lead. As the half closed, both teams traded baskets back and forth, but it would be Frostburg holding the 49-45 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Bobcats were able to keep a steady lead in the opening minutes. However, a Tyree Davis and one would tie things up at 62 around the 13-minute mark. The Bobcats grabbed the lead again and were up 77-73 with 8 minutes left in the game. Jalen Barnes and Daquan Coleman both knocked down a three pointer around the 7-minute mark, but Frostburg still had a narrow 84-83 lead. The offensives for both teams were catching fire, but the Bobcats extended their lead 100-94 with just under 3 minutes left. Isacc James stepped up with back-to-back and ones around the 1:45 mark. Frostburg would respond with 4 points of their own and still had a 106-100 lead with exactly 1 minute remaining. The Tigers desperately needed a few buckets and some stops. Unfortunately, Frostburg State controlled the final minute and prevailed to a 112-107 victory.

On the stats sheet, Kevin Constant led all Tigers with 25 points on 10/12 from the field. Isaac James had a massive double-double with 20 points and 17 rebounds. Kapone Barley added 18 points and was a perfect 7-7 from the field. Jalen Barnes and Daquan Coleman both chipped in 14 points each. Tyree Davis rounded out the Tigers in double figures with 11 of his own.

After the tough defeat, the Tigers will look to regroup and return home to prepare for their next match up. That will come on Saturday February 22nd when the Tigers play host to Fairmont State at 4 pm on Senior Day.
