SALEM, West Virginia - With some blustery conditions outside in the Valley of Learning, Salem had a rare tripleheader on the docket in T. Edward Davis Gymnasium. Phase 1 of the UHC Family Medicine Day festivities was the Salem women's basketball contest against the Pioneers of Glenville State. Salem got some excellent individual performances, but unfortunately, Glenville State still took away the 89-65 win.
In the first quarter, the Tigers put their initial focus on the combination of the inside-outside game behind Kamryn Ruffin and Carmen Vasquez. However, the Pioneers rode some streaky shooting to a 27-17 advantage after one.
In the second, Salem went back to their seasoned veterans, Liliani Krause and Cassandra Smith, for the bulk of the scoring in the period. Yet, the Pioneers were able to keep the Tigers at bay, and held a 45-29 advantage going into the halftime break.
After the intermission, the Tigers had their work cut out for them, but made a valiant effort to eat away at the Pioneer advantage. Kori Pillette and Lucia Yanez put in some solid work for the Tigers, but Glenville State carried a 67-48 scoreline into the fourth quarter.Â
In the final frame, Salem threw everything they had at the Pioneers in order to claw their way back into the game. It was simply too little too late for the Tigers, and Glenville State took the 89-65 win back home to Gilmer County.Â
On the stats sheet, Salem got another huge double double performance from Carmen Vasquez with 25 points and 16 rebounds. Liliani Krause added 21 points, and Cassandra Smith chipped in 12 points to round out the Tigers scoring in double figures.
Salem will be back in action this week on the road when the Tigers head down to Charleston on February 12th for a 5:30 PM matchup with the Golden Eagles.
