CHARLESTON, West Virginia- In the final game of the month, the Salem Tigers baseball team traveled down to the capital city on Sunday. Salem went up against the Charleston Golden Eagles for an afternoon doubleheader. The Tigers were able to leave Charleston with the huge doubleheader sweep.
Salem 5, Charleston 3
In game 1,
Conor Thiele was the starter on the mound for Salem. The Tigers got out to a quick start after
Alex Harper hit a rbi single to score
Aidan McMurdo. Charleston would strike back with a run of their own in the bottom of the 2
nd. In the top of the 3
rd,
Reese Rinna hit a rbi single to right field. McMurdo scored his second run of the day and Salem had a 2-1 lead. Later,
Aaron Forbes extended the lead even more with a rbi single in the top of the 5
th, which scored McMurdo once again. Salem maintained a 3-1 lead as we headed into the 7
th inning. The Golden Eagles had one last chance to get back in this one. Unfortunately, they were able to do just that after a costly mistake by the Tigers. Charleston would tie things up and push the game to the 8
th inning. Salem was able to load the bases up and capitalize on it with 2 runs in the top of the 8
th. Charleston now found themselves down 2 runs again and this time couldn't tie things back up. Salem prevailed in game 1 by a final score of 5-3. Thiele improved his record to 3-0 on the season.
Salem 11, Charleston 5
In game 2,
Eric Kovach started at pitcher for Salem. Salem once again got out to a hot start with an
Aidan McMurdo rbi double. Followed up by a
Reese Rinna rbi single that scored McMurdo. The Tigers kept the momentum rolling in the 3
rdwhen
Ryder Costa hit a rbi single. Moments later,
Luis Angarita followed that up with a rbi single, which scored Rinna. However, the Tigers weren't done scoring in the 3
rd inning when Costa would score a run to close out the inning. Salem now held a massive 5-0 lead after 3 innings. In the top of the 4
th,
Aaron Forbes rbi doubled to right field where McMurdo and
Jose Lojo would get the score. Charleston was able to answer back in the next couple innings scoring 4 straight runs. Salem now held just a 7-4 lead as we headed into the final inning. Kylian Izagu grounded out to 1
st earning a rbi to give the Tigers a 8-4 lead. Costa would score another run for Salem off a Charleston wild pitch.
Alex Harper extended the lead to 11-4 after a rbi single scored Lojo and Rose. The Golden Eagles would load the bases in the bottom of the 7
th but were only able to get 1 run out of it. Kovach earned his 3
rd victory on the year as Salem defeated Charleston 11-5.
After the doubleheader sweep, the Tigers will look to keep this momentum rolling to build a win streak. Salem will have some time off to prepare for their next weekend series at Wheeling.
