Tigers Celebrate Senior Day with Sweep of Waynesburg

BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia - The Salem softball team was fortunate to have a spectacular afternoon of clear weather today for their final home twinbill of the season. They played host to the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets from just across the state line in Pennsylvania, and the Tigers celebrated seniors Kaydee Anderson and Jazmyn Moetului in style with a pair of shutout victories. Each game played out as follows:

Salem 7, Waynesburg 0

In Game 1, Salem got the bats going early, and kept the energy level up throughout the contest. They opened up the scoring with RBI doubles from Kylie Zinn and Karmen Hogan in the 2nd to control the contest 2-0. Kendall Lemley added a RBI double of her own in the 3rd, and Brooke Wise really broke things open with a 3 RBI triple in the fourth. Lemley added an RBI single in the 4th, and Salem rode their strong defensive performance the rest of the way to the 7-0 win. Kendall Lemley went the distance for Salem in the pitcher's circle to earn the win as she allowed just 1 hit and struck out a pair of batters in the contest.

Salem 8, Waynesburg 0

In Game 2, Salem started right back where they left off in Game 1. Senior Jazmyn Moetului opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first, and then was involved in a double steal play that allowed her to steal second, and Kylie Zinn to steal home. Moetului then reached home herself when Bella Ortiz earned a walk with the bases loaded. Kyleigh Cook added the final run of the inning shortly thereafter with a single to center field. Cook, Hogan and Ortiz each added RBI singles in the 2nd inning to give Salem a 7-0 advantage. The final run of the game was scored in the 4th when Abigail Harki was hit by an errant Waynesburg pitch with the bases loaded when brought Alexis Valverde home from third. With the run rule in effect after the 8th run, the game concluded in the top of the 5th. In the pitcher's circle, starter Franchesca Alvaro earned the win with 4 solid innings of work and 3 strikeouts. Brooke Wise came on in relief in the 5th, and struck out 1 to secure the victory.

With this pair of senior day wins, the Tigers should be energized as they head into a pair of games against the Wheeling Cardinals on Thursday, April 24th at 3 PM.
