BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia - In what became a great afternoon of weather for Salem's softball team, the Tigers played host to the Point Park Pioneers today for a mid-week doubleheader at The Bridge Sports Complex. After a slow offensive day in Game 1, the Tigers found a resurgent performance in Game 2 to earn the split with the Pioneers. Each contest played out as follows:
Point Park 4, Salem 0
In Game 1, the Tigers had a tough time getting the offensive attack moving early in the contest. The Pioneers held a 1-0 lead for the bulk of the game, but took solid control of the game with 3 runs in the 6th. Salem needed a big 7th inning rally to get back in the game, and they had the beginnings of one with singles from Jazmyn Moetului and Kylie Zinn. However, the rally ended without a run for the Tigers, and Salem fell 4-0. From the pitcher's circle, starter Franchesca Alvaro went 6 innings and struck out a pair of Pioneer batters. Brooke Wise came on in relief for the Tigers in the top of the 7th.
Salem 7, Point Park 3
After the slow day offensively for Salem in Game 1, the Tigers finally got the bats going in the second contest of the day. A Kylie Zinn RBI double opened the scoring for Salem in the 2nd. In the third, Bella Ortiz was able to score on a wild pitch, and Kellen Ramey was able to score on a Jazmyn Moetului groundout. In the 4th, RBI doubles from Kyleigh Cook, Brooke Wise, and Abigail Harki gave Salem a commanding 6-0 advantage. The Pioneers added a run in the 5th, but the Tigers answered it with an RBI triple from Bella Ortiz in that same inning to put the game at 7-2. Salem then held off a Pioneer surge in the 6th to secure the 7-3 victory. In the pitcher's circle, Kendall Lemley earned her 11th win of the season, and she struck out 4 Pioneer batters in the contest.Â
Salem will hit the road for their next few contests. The first of the road matchups will be against the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State on Saturday, April 12th at 1 PM down in Institute, West Virginia.
