Tigers Come Up Empty in Fairmont

The Salem University men's basketball team fell on the road Saturday afternoon, dropping a 102-66 decision to Fairmont State University at Joe Retton Arena.

Salem (8-17) battled in the second half, shooting an impressive 56 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes, but a strong first-half surge by the Falcons proved too much to overcome. Fairmont State, now 22-4 overall, shot 59 percent in the opening half to build a 51-21 lead at the break and never looked back.

The Falcons set the tone early with a fast-paced attack and dominance in the paint, scoring 62 points inside and converting 37 points off turnovers. Fairmont State also held a 45-28 advantage on the glass and turned 22 Salem turnovers into consistent transition opportunities.

Despite the deficit, the Tigers showed resilience in the second half. Salem knocked down 6-of-10 from three-point range after halftime and went 11-of-13 from the free-throw line in the final period.

Xavier Price led the Tigers with 13 points, adding three rebounds and going a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. Zahki Fallen and Jamari Gamble each finished with 12 points, while Eman Lawal added nine. Salem's bench contributed 25 points, highlighted by Vaughn Prosser's seven points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting effort and Ezekiel Birchett's six points on 2-of-2 shooting from beyond the arc.

Fairmont State placed four players in double figures, led by David Jolinder and CJ Meredith with 18 points apiece. The Falcons shot 56 percent overall for the game and connected on 11 three-pointers.

Salem will look to regroup as it prepares for its next contest, continuing its road stretch against tough regional competition.
